The DS

The Citroën DS was produced from 1955 to 1975 and became one of France’s most recognizable and influential cars. It was offered in various body styles — including the DS 19, DS 21, and later DS 23 — and was paired with elegant station wagon and convertible versions designed by coachbuilder Henri Chapron. The DS’s hydropneumatic suspension system not only provided comfort but also allowed the car to raise or lower itself, a revolutionary feature at the time.

Technologically, the DS was far ahead of its rivals, introducing innovations such as swiveling headlights (introduced in 1967) that turned with the steering to improve night visibility. It was also one of the first mass-produced cars with front-wheel drive and a fiberglass roof to reduce weight and lower the center of gravity. Over its 20-year production run, more than 1.4 million DS models were built, and it remains a symbol of French engineering excellence and avant-garde design.
